Introducing the PaECTER language model, a new and freely available tool for everybody that works with patents! PaECTER is is now open source and easily accessible from huggingface. Use it for: - Similarity comparisons - Tracking the textual evolution of an inventor's work - Classifying patents with precision PaECTER stands forPatent Embeddings using Citation-informed TransformERs - think for SPECTER, just for Patents In comparison tests, PaECTER has outperformed earlier models, with an impressive 80% accuracy in recommending the first patent among 30 samples. This unmatched performance is a testament to the hard work of our team and the invaluable support from our predecessors. During summer we asked 2.4k registered hosts in the #scienceforukraine database about the demand they faced from #science|tists from #Ukraine (22% replied):Controlling for everything, support offers in the *social sciences* and *scholarships* everywhere were most in demand; no country preferences. Also, specific grant programs (e.g., Philipp Schwartz Initiative of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation or the PAUSE program of Campus France) seem to have motivated support offers.

🆕 #ScienceForUkraine survey report Did the support mechanisms offered by the global scientific community meet the scientific needs of Ukrainian scientists? It is very important question that no one was able to answer so far. As an NGO coordinating the largest database of support opportunities for Ukrainian scientists worldwide, #ScienceForUkraine has tried to provide an answer. Over the last months, we’ve conducted a survey among all listings that have ever been submitted to the database. In total, 2443 unique listings were evaluated. MAIN CONCLUSIONS 🥇Scholarships – more preferred 📈 Highest demand in Social Sciences & Humanities 🌍 Barely any country preference ❌ 30% of listings received no solicitation 💰Funding motivated support offers 🤲🏽>3k Ukrainian scientists supported via offers advertised on #ScienceForUkraine website Why did hosts offer support to Ukrainian scholars? 🤝🏽 Feeling of solidarity (2/3) 💰 Special funds available (1/5) 💙💛 Prior connections to Ukraine (1/10) Complete report can be found online and will soon be published as a peer reviewed publication https://lnkd.in/eP2M2nks

#publication #ScienceForUkraine #TheConversation has just published an article written by our team members, Michael Rose and Oleksandra Ivashchenko in collaboration with Ina Ganguli and Stefano Baruffaldi. https://lnkd.in/d2R29H9f The article sheds light on the evident damage inflicted on Ukraine's science system, with universities and research institutions being physically destroyed or disrupted, resulting in a considerable decline in research output. Additionally, funding cuts and salary reductions have further impeded scientific progress. The ongoing war has also led to a potential brain drain as many scientists have been forced to leave the country. To mitigate the long-term consequences and aid the recovery of Ukrainian science, the authors propose three key interventions that can be particularly effective: 1️⃣ Direct Funding: Policymakers, both domestically and internationally, should provide direct financial support to researchers. Even small amounts of funding can make a substantial difference by enabling experiments, journal submissions, and maintaining academic memberships. 2️⃣ Remote Research Positions: Creating remote research opportunities allows Ukrainian scientists to continue their work from within the country while receiving support and payment from non-Ukrainian institutions. Remote fellowship programs, like those offered by Econ4UA and #ScienceForUkraine, empower researchers to contribute to their fields without leaving their homeland. 3️⃣ International Research Opportunities: Collaborating with scientific institutions outside of Ukraine can provide resident research opportunities for Ukrainian scientists abroad. These experiences foster valuable connections and knowledge exchange, paving the way for Ukraine to become a modern and globally integrated producer of science. Read the full article!

The last chapter of my dissertation got published at "Labour Economics": Adviser connectedness and placement outcomes in the economics job market. Suraj Shekhar and me study the academic job market for Economics PhDs. In this market, information asymmetry regarding application quality is huge, but information asymmetry regarding job openings is virutally absent. We show that new Econ PhDs job market outcomes depend in part on the connectedness of their advisers. This might be because they transmit credible quality signals among their network (but we don't prove this channel). But we show that social connections matter even in a labour market where information frictions regarding job openings are virtually absent. 1. New Econ PhDs start their careers in (academically) better places when their advisers are more Eigenvector central 2.
